Learn Salah Online with a Live Teacher

Salah (the daily prayer) is the second pillar of Islam. It is the one act of worship a Muslim does every day for life. Many people know this and still feel unsure if they pray the right way. Was my wudu (washing before prayer) complete? Are my words in ruku (bowing) correct? Does a missed sunnah prayer change anything? A chart on the wall cannot answer these questions. A teacher who watches you pray can.

In this course, a Salam Campus tutor teaches you or your child live, 30 minutes at a time. The course takes 1 to 3 months. You keep going until the whole prayer is correct. That means from the first takbir (saying Allahu Akbar to start) to the final salam (the closing greeting). Students join from the USA, UK, Canada and Australia. We fit the timetable to your day, not ours.

What You Will Learn

The course starts before the prayer itself. First you learn the statement of faith and how to make yourself clean for prayer. At the end, you learn the extra prayers that most people want once the 5 daily prayers are firm. Here is the full list:

  • The shahadah (statement of faith): its Arabic words, its meaning, and why it comes first
  • Wudu step by step, what breaks it, and when ghusl (a full-body wash) is needed
  • The 5 prayer times and how to find them where you live
  • Facing the qiblah (direction of Makkah), covering correctly, and the intention
  • Standing, ruku, sujud (putting your forehead on the ground) and sitting, with the exact words for each
  • Al-Fatihah (the first chapter of the Quran) said correctly, plus 3 short surahs
  • Tashahhud (the words said while sitting), salawat (blessings on the Prophet) and the final duas
  • The number of units in each prayer, and the sunnah prayers before and after them
  • Witr (the odd-numbered night prayer), prayer while traveling, and making up a missed prayer
  • The most common mistakes and how to fix each one

Online Salah Classes for Beginners and New Muslims

This course serves new Muslims best of all. They have no old habits to unlearn. They also have a strong reason to get it right. The tutor starts from zero. You learn how to say the shahadah and how to make wudu at a normal sink. You also learn what to wear and where to stand. Each Arabic phrase comes in English letters with its meaning. The tutor says each one slowly until you can repeat it.

We do not expect you to read Arabic or know any surahs. If you can say Al-Fatihah by the end of the first 2 weeks, you are on track.

How Online Classes Work at Salam Campus

Classes are live, one-on-one and 30 minutes long on Zoom or Google Meet. In prayer lessons the camera matters more than in most courses. The tutor needs to see your body position, and you need to see theirs. Place your device so your whole body shows when you stand. The tutor shows each movement and watches you do it. Then the tutor fixes it right away.

You choose the days and times, and slots are open around the clock. If you tell us first, we move a missed class to a new time. Women and girls can have a female tutor. You can ask for one when you book the free trial.

After each class, the tutor sends a short summary with the words you practiced. You can go over them between classes. A parent should be present for children under 10.

Learn Salah Online, Step by Step

Every class starts with the student praying a short prayer while the tutor watches. This way, nothing learned earlier slips. You move on when you are ready, not by a date. Here is the usual order:

Why teach Fajr first? Once you can pray 2 units correctly, every other prayer repeats the same steps.

  • Weeks 1 and 2: faith, wudu, the prayer times and Al-Fatihah
  • Weeks 3 and 4: the full 2-unit Fajr (dawn) prayer
  • Weeks 5 and 6: the 3-unit and 4-unit prayers and the words of tashahhud
  • The last weeks: sunnah prayers, witr, the rules for travel, and a full review

Who This Course Is For

Children can start from about 6 years old. By then they can stand through a short prayer and follow the tutor. Women coming back to prayer after a long break are among our most common adult students. So are people who have prayed for years but never had their prayer checked. This course also suits:

  • Adults who learned Salah informally and think they may be making mistakes
  • New Muslims who need everything from the start, taught with patience and without shame
  • Parents who want to check their own prayer before they teach their children
  • Teenagers who stopped praying and want to start again with confidence
  • Older adults who were never shown the correct way in their own language

Prayer Lessons for Kids Online

Children learn Salah best by doing it. So the tutor keeps talk short and practice long. First, the child learns wudu at the sink with a parent nearby. Next come the prayer movements, one at a time. The words for each position come once the movement feels easy. Pictures, repeating and lots of praise carry the lesson. The tutor never lectures a 7-year-old on Islamic law.

At 3 classes a week, most children can pray a full 2-unit prayer within a month, with the right words. Most can pray all the daily prayers within 2 to 3 months.

Correct Recitation Inside the Prayer

A prayer has words as well as movements, and you must say the words properly. The tutor practices Al-Fatihah and the short surahs with you. You also practice the words of ruku, sujud and tashahhud. The tutor pays close attention to Arabic sounds that English speakers find hard. Want to go further? You can move on to Noorani Qaida or Quran reading with Tajweed (the rules for reading the Quran correctly). The same tutor can often keep teaching you.

Students who already read Arabic move faster through this part. Others get each phrase in English letters, with an audio clip after class. At the start of the next class, the tutor listens to you say it. This goes on until you say it cleanly.

Common Salah Mistakes We Help You Fix

Each of these mistakes is common. Each is easy to fix once someone sees it. A tutor who watches you live will spot them in the first class. Fixing them turns a prayer that is done into a prayer that is done correctly. Here are the ones we see most:

Some mistakes are in the words. A person may say the tashahhud with a phrase missing. Or they may say the wrong dhikr (words of praise) in sujud. In a big group prayer, these can go unnoticed for years. One one-on-one lesson catches them.

  • Rushing ruku and sujud, so the back is never still
  • Saying Al-Fatihah with missed letters
  • Sitting the wrong way in the final tashahhud
  • Wudu that skips the elbows or the ankles
  • Praying the wrong number of units because nobody ever wrote them down

Fees for Prayer Lessons

Prayer lessons use the standard Salam Campus monthly plans. 3 classes a week, 30 minutes each, cost USD 54 per month. You can also choose 2, 4 or 5 classes a week. We bill monthly in USD, GBP, CAD or AUD. There is no sign-up fee, and you can stop when the course is done. Most students finish in 1 to 3 months, so the total cost stays low. See all plans on our quran learning fees page at /quran-learning-fees/.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. The tutor says every phrase slowly. You see each phrase on screen in English letters, with its meaning. You learn the words by hearing and repeating them. This is how most Muslims in history learned them. You do not need to read Arabic script. Still, many students take Noorani Qaida (a first book for Arabic letters) later. Then they can read the surahs they now say from memory.

At 3 classes a week, most adults can pray a full 2-unit prayer correctly within 2 to 3 weeks. They can pray all 5 daily prayers within 1 to 2 months. Children and complete beginners may take up to 3 months. The tutor does not move on until each step is firm. So the time depends on the student, not on a fixed calendar.

The tutor teaches the prayer the way most Sunni Muslims pray. The schools of Islamic law differ in a few small details, such as where the hands rest. If you tell us your family's school, the tutor follows it. If you have no preference, the tutor explains the accepted options. We do not turn a beginner's class into a debate.

Yes. Salam Campus has qualified female tutors for prayer lessons. Many women, and mothers of daughters, ask for them. They come from the UK, Canada, the USA and Australia. Ask for a female teacher when you book the free trial. She will stay with you for the whole course. You can also ask for a change at any time.

Yes. It is one of the most common reasons people join. The course starts with the shahadah and wudu and assumes nothing. Our tutors are used to answering basic questions in plain words. There is no group of other students. So nobody needs to feel shy about starting from the very beginning.

You need a few simple things. The tutor shows all written material on screen and sends it by message after class. So you do not need to buy anything. Here is the list: a phone, tablet or laptop with a camera, and a stable internet connection. You also need a prayer mat. Make sure the camera can see you stand, bow and put your forehead down. A sink nearby for wudu practice helps in the early lessons.
