Class Times in Japan Standard Time (JST)

Japan uses Japan Standard Time (JST), which is UTC+9. Japan does not move its clocks. A class booked for 4:30 pm stays at 4:30 pm all year.

Classes run 24/7 and you choose the hour. Japan is 4 hours ahead of our office in Islamabad (PKT), and the Pakistan clock never changes either. The middle column is only a clock converter, and you always book in Japan time.

Here are six sample times:

The Japanese School Year: What the Rules Say

Public schools in Japan follow one national rule for the school year, and local boards decide the rest. The table shows the rules for elementary schools, from the ministry order and the Cabinet order that carry out the School Education Act:

School year and days off in Japan, from the School Education Act rules
RuleWhat it says
School yearAn elementary school year starts on 1 April and ends on 31 March of the next year.
Days off at public schoolsSaturdays, Sundays and national holidays (a local board can decide otherwise), plus the days it sets.
Terms and long breaksThe city or prefecture board of education sets the terms and the summer, winter and end-of-year breaks.
Start and end of lessonsThe principal of each school sets the times.
Private schoolsEach private school sets its own terms and days off in its school rules.

So no single calendar fits all of Japan. Ask your child's school for its dates and send us the long breaks. A break is a good time to add one more class a week. The principal sets when lessons end. Tell us when your child gets home, and we will offer slots from there.

Public Holidays From November 2026 to May 2027

The Cabinet Office of Japan publishes the national holidays. We took these dates from its holiday list. Public schools are usually closed on these days, so each one can be a day for a longer class. Here are the holidays from November 2026 to May 2027:

National holidays in Japan, November 2026 to May 2027, from the Cabinet Office
DateDayHoliday
3 November 2026TuesdayCulture Day
23 November 2026MondayLabor Thanksgiving Day
1 January 2027FridayNew Year's Day
11 January 2027MondayComing of Age Day
11 February 2027ThursdayNational Foundation Day
23 February 2027TuesdayThe Emperor's Birthday
21 and 22 March 2027Sunday and MondayVernal Equinox Day, then a substitute holiday
29 April 2027ThursdayShowa Day
3 to 5 May 2027Monday to WednesdayConstitution Memorial Day, Greenery Day, Children's Day

Four days off fall close together in spring: 29 April, then 3, 4 and 5 May 2027. Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha are not on the Cabinet Office list, so they are not national days off. Tell us a few weeks ahead if you want an Eid class moved.

Ramadan 2027 in Tokyo: Expected Fasting Hours

Ramadan 2027 is expected to begin on Monday 8 February and end on Monday 8 March. Eid al-Fitr is expected on Tuesday 9 March. The sighting of the new moon decides the real days.

The table is for Tokyo and uses the Muslim World League method, which sets Fajr (dawn) at 18 degrees below the horizon. The method common in North America puts Fajr about 15 minutes later. Follow your own community timetable for the real day. Here are the expected times for the first, middle and last day:

Expected fasting hours in Tokyo, Ramadan 2027 (expected, not final)
Date in 2027Fajr (dawn)Maghrib (sunset)Expected fast
8 February (day 1)5:10 am5:15 pmAbout 12 hours 5 minutes
22 February (day 15)4:56 am5:29 pmAbout 12 hours 33 minutes
8 March (day 29)4:38 am5:42 pmAbout 13 hours 4 minutes

A class after iftar or in the hour before dawn can work well. Send us your plan two or three weeks ahead and we will move your slot.

Muslim Families in Japan: Where They Live

Japan has a small Muslim community that is growing fast. Tanada Hirofumi is a Professor Emeritus at Waseda University. He estimates about 420,000 Muslims in Japan at the end of 2024, or about 0.3% of the people. His paper counts mostly by passport country, not by faith, so it is an estimate. Read the paper.

He also gave a split by prefecture. These are his estimates for the end of 2020, for the seven prefectures with 10,000 Muslims or more:

Estimated Muslims by prefecture in Japan, end of 2020, by Tanada Hirofumi
PrefectureEstimated Muslims, end of 2020
TokyoAbout 31,000
SaitamaAbout 22,000
AichiAbout 22,000
KanagawaAbout 16,000
IbarakiAbout 14,000
OsakaAbout 11,000
ChibaAbout 10,000

In 2020, 73% of Muslims lived in the Kanto (around Tokyo), Chukyo (Aichi, Gifu and Shizuoka) and Kansai (Kyoto, Osaka and Hyogo) areas. By the end of 2023, that share was 67%, and Hokkaido's share was rising. More families now live far from the big cities, and an online class reaches them wherever they live.

Official Counts: Residents From Four Countries

The Immigration Services Agency of Japan counts foreign residents by passport country. Its table for the end of 2025 shows these four countries, next to the end of 2024:

Foreign residents in Japan by nationality, end of 2024 and end of 2025, Immigration Services Agency
Residents fromEnd of 2024End of 2025Change
Indonesia199,824266,069Up 33.2%
India53,97458,999Up 9.3%
Bangladesh35,07344,938Up 28.1%
Pakistan29,64734,911Up 17.8%

This table counts residents from each country. It does not count Muslims, because the agency does not record faith.

Quran Classes in Tokyo and Beyond: Online, at Home

On the day we looked, the top Google results for Quran classes in Tokyo included in-person mosque classes, on set days and hours. An in-person class means a trip, and the place sets the timetable. An online class comes to your home, and you set the hour. Some families do both. Our page on Quran classes near me compares a mosque class, a home tutor and an online class.

We have no centre in Japan. A family in Hokkaido and a family in Osaka join in the same way. All you need is a laptop, tablet or phone and a quiet corner.

Teachers, Languages and Classes for Ladies

Teachers can explain in English, Arabic or Urdu. Tell us which you prefer on the trial form. We do not teach in Japanese or Indonesian, so please check this before you book.

Women and girls can ask for a female teacher, at the same price and for every course. Our page explains how we check every teacher.

Kids can join from age 4, and teens, adults and new Muslims are welcome as well. A parent is free to sit beside the child in any class. Our kids page has more.

Tanada Hirofumi's estimate for the end of 2020 puts Tokyo first, with about 31,000, then Saitama and Aichi with about 22,000 each. These are prefectures, not cities, and the numbers are estimates. The table on this page shows all seven.

By one estimate, yes. Tanada Hirofumi's 2025 paper puts the number of Muslims at about 350,000 at the end of 2023 and about 420,000 at the end of 2024. The Immigration Services Agency also counts more residents from Indonesia, India, Bangladesh and Pakistan in 2025 than in 2024.
