Why Quran Reading with Tajweed Matters

Tajweed is the set of rules for reading the Quran. It tells you how to say each letter. It also tells you how sounds join, stretch and stop.

Why do these rules matter? A small change in sound can change a word. And a changed word can change the meaning. So Tajweed keeps the text safe, and it also makes your reading beautiful. Scholars agree that each Muslim should read the Quran correctly, as well as they can.

What you need is a teacher who can hear you read. The teacher then shows you exactly where a sound is going wrong.

The good news is that Tajweed is much easier than people think. Here is why:

  • There are only a few rules
  • The rules make sense and follow a clear logic
  • Most learners already use some of the rules without knowing their names

Learn Quran Reading with Tajweed Online

At Salam Campus, this course is fully online. It is 1 student with 1 tutor, in live 30-minute classes.

You can choose a male or female tutor. You can pick class times that suit your time zone in the USA, UK, Canada or Australia. You keep the same teacher for the whole course.

The class is private, so you set the pace. A fast learner is never held back. A careful learner is never rushed.

Here is how a class works:

  • The tutor shows the Quran on the screen
  • The tutor reads a short part aloud
  • You read the same part back while the tutor listens
  • The tutor fixes each mistake right away
  • The tutor explains the rule behind each fix in plain words, so you can use it yourself next time

Quran Reading with Tajweed for Kids

Children who have finished Noorani Qaida (the first book for reading Arabic) are ready for this course.

The tutor teaches the rules one at a time. Each rule comes with examples the child can hear and copy. The child does not have to memorize a long list.

After each class, parents get a short progress note. Each month, they also get a summary. It shows which surahs (chapters) the child has read and which rules the child now knows well.

Most children finish the last juz (1 of the 30 parts of the Quran) within 6 months. By then, they read it smoothly and by the rules. Then they go on to read the whole Quran with their tutor.

The tutor keeps lessons lively in these ways:

  • Short reading goals for each class
  • Praise for each rule the child gets right
  • Longer passages, added a little at a time

Quran Reading with Tajweed Classes for Adults

Many adults read the Quran often, but no one ever taught them the rules. Some learned the rules as children and have forgotten them. Others learned from a family member whose own reading had mistakes.

Our adult classes start with an honest check of how you read now. Then we focus on the rules you need most. We do not waste your time on what you already do well.

You can move a lesson if you tell us first. Between classes, your tutor gives you short practice tasks that you can really do.

The class fits around your working day. For example, you can study:

  • Early in the morning, before you go to work
  • In your lunch break
  • Late in the evening, after the children are asleep

What You Will Learn

The course plan covers each rule found in a standard Tajweed book. We always teach through reading, not only through theory. By the end, you will see each rule on the page. You will use it without stopping to think.

  • Makharij al-huroof: where each of the 29 letters is made in the mouth and throat
  • Sifaat al-huroof: the qualities that make letters different, like seen and saad, or the 2 kinds of taa
  • Noon sakinah and tanween: izhar, idgham, iqlab and ikhfa
  • Meem sakinah: ikhfa shafawi, idgham shafawi and izhar shafawi
  • Madd (stretching a sound): natural, connected, separated, necessary and the madd of leen
  • Qalqalah letters, and how strong the bounce is at the end of a word or verse
  • Heavy and light sounds (tafkheem and tarqeeq), including Laam and Raa
  • Ghunnah (the sound through the nose) and how long to hold it
  • Waqf and ibtida: the stopping signs, and how to start reading again the right way
  • Reading practice through the whole Quran at a calm, steady and pleasant pace

How Online Classes Work at Salam Campus

Classes run on Zoom or Google Meet. You can join from any phone, tablet or computer. We share a clear digital mushaf (copy of the Quran) on the screen. So you and your tutor always look at the same line.

Cameras stay on. This way, the tutor can see the shape of your mouth when a letter needs fixing.

First, you take a free trial and a reading check. Then we give you a regular tutor and fixed weekly class times. We keep a report of your progress. It shows the surahs you have finished and the rules you know well. You can open it at any time.

If you miss a class and tell us first, we make it up. You can also change your tutor or your class times. Just contact our support team. They are there 24 hours a day.

You do not need to install anything except the video app. You do not need to buy anything either. Your tutor gives you these as free PDFs:

  • The mushaf you read from in class
  • Practice sheets for home
  • Short summaries of each rule

Reading the Quran with Tajweed Step by Step

We start where the Qaida ends: with the letters. In the first lessons, the tutor checks that each letter comes from the right place. The tutor also checks that each letter has the right qualities. If a letter is wrong, no later rule will work.

Next, the tutor teaches the noon and meem rules. These rules appear on almost every line of the Quran. They give the fastest change in how your reading sounds.

Madd, qalqalah (a small bounce in the sound) and the heavy and light letters come next. You practice each one in real verses until you do it without thinking.

The last stage is smooth reading. You read longer passages at a steady pace. You stop and start in the right places. You learn to read in a calm, even voice. When you finish the course, you can read any page of the Quran correctly and with confidence.

Here are the 4 stages in short:

  • Stage 1: each letter from the right place, with the right qualities
  • Stage 2: the noon and meem rules
  • Stage 3: madd, qalqalah and the heavy and light letters
  • Stage 4: smooth reading of long passages, with correct stops and starts

Who This Course Is For

Where This Course Leads

Once you can read correctly, you can go on to any other part of Quran study.

Whatever you choose next, you will be able to open the mushaf and read any page correctly. This skill lasts your whole life. You can also pass it on to your children. Book a free trial, and let us check your reading today.

Here are the most common next steps for our students:

  • Memorizing the Quran (Hifz). Good Tajweed makes memorizing faster and review easier.
  • Tafsir (the meaning and explanation of the Quran), to understand what you now read so well.
  • Arabic language, so the words themselves become clear to you.

It is hard to choose a Quran teacher online. So we made the first step free. Every step after it is easy to undo.

Parents may join any class. You can listen in from the next chair.

Frequently Asked Questions

Most students read smoothly and by the rules in 6 to 12 months, with 3 classes a week. Some students already read quite well. They may only need to fix a few rules, so they can finish sooner. A child who has just finished the Qaida will take closer to 1 year. Your tutor gives you an estimate after the reading check class.

You need to read simple Arabic words with vowels. If you can do that, you are ready. It does not matter if you learned from Noorani Qaida, another first book or at home. If you cannot join letters into words yet, your free trial tutor will suggest the Qaida course first.

Both. Each correction in class is linked to the rule behind it. So you learn to spot idgham, ikhfa, madd and the other rules on the page. Then you use them yourself. By the end, you can explain why a word is read in a certain way. You do not just copy your tutor.

Yes. Classes are 30 minutes long, at times you choose. You can move a class if you tell us first. Homework is short, most often reading a few lines a day. Many of our adult students in the USA, UK, Canada and Australia study before work. Others study after the children are in bed.

Yes. Each Salam Campus Tajweed tutor holds an ijazah or a known Tajweed qualification. An ijazah is a teaching license with a chain of teachers back to the Prophet. We test each tutor on their reading before they join. Our quality team also watches their classes on a regular basis. You can ask for a male or female teacher. You can change your tutor at any time if the fit is not right.

This course teaches you to read any page of the Quran correctly from the text. Memorization (Hifz) teaches you to recite the Quran from memory. For Hifz, your reading must be strong first. Many students finish Quran Reading with Tajweed first. Then they move on to our memorization program with the same tutor.
