Learn Tafsir Online with Qualified Scholars

Many Muslims can recite the Quran well. Yet they do not know what the verses say. This course closes that gap. When you learn Tafsir online at Salam Campus, a scholar takes you through the Quran one passage at a time. The teacher explains the words and the story behind each verse. You also learn what the verse means for a Muslim today.

The aim is to understand the Quran for daily life. It is not a scholar's degree. You will not become a Mufassir (a trained Tafsir scholar), and we say that openly. But you will know what Allah commands and what He praises. You will know what He warns against and what He promises. This meaning will then guide your recitation, your prayer and your daily choices.

Classes are one-on-one, so the teacher moves at your pace. You can ask questions at any time. You can also choose the surahs that matter most to you.

What You Will Learn

Tafsir has its own rules. A good explanation rests on three things. The first is the Arabic language. The second is what the Prophet (peace be upon him) and his Companions said about a verse. The third is the set of rules that scholars built over many centuries. Our course plan gives you enough of each, so you can follow the classical Tafsir books with confidence.

  • The meaning of the verses, word by word and as a whole
  • Basic Arabic grammar to follow the text
  • Shaan-e-Nuzool (the story of why a verse came down)
  • Rabt (the links between surahs and between passages)
  • The Ahkam (rulings) found in the verses
  • How to put those rulings into practice
  • Good manners of study, with correct Tajweed (rules of clear recitation)
  • Qiraat (ways of reading) and how they can change the meaning

How Each Online Tafsir Lesson Works

Each class is 30 minutes long. Each one follows the same simple plan:

At the end of the class, the teacher gives you the lessons and rulings you can act on. Sometimes the classical scholars do not agree on a verse. Then your teacher gives you the main view. The teacher also tells you about the other view openly and does not hide it. You leave each class with a short summary to read before the next one.

We usually start with Juz Amma (the last part of the Quran). Most students know these short surahs by heart. They enjoy finding out what they have been reciting for years. After that, you can go through the Quran in order. Or you can study the surahs you read most in prayer.

  • You recite the verses for the day, and the teacher checks your Tajweed.
  • The teacher explains the new words and any grammar you need.
  • You learn the meaning of the passage as a whole.
  • You learn why the verses came down and how they link to the verses around them.

Learn Quran Tafseer Online Without Arabic Fluency

You do not need to speak Arabic to join. Our teachers explain in clear English. They use Arabic words only when those words help you. The grammar part is kept light on purpose. You learn just enough to tell apart:

This is enough to make sense of the Arabic text when you look at it. If you want to go deeper, you can join our Arabic language classes too. If you only want to understand the Quran in your own language, you will find all you need here.

Over time, you will start to spot familiar words in each surah you recite. The teacher builds on those words. You do not have to learn long grammar tables by heart.

Is English not your first language? Tell us at the trial class. Some of our Tafsir teachers can also explain in Urdu, and we will match you with one of them.

  • A verb and a noun
  • A command and a statement
  • One person or thing and many (singular and plural)

How Online Classes Work at Salam Campus

Starting is simple. Here are the steps:

Your teacher keeps a record of the surahs you have covered. The teacher also notes the points you need to review. If you miss a class, send us a message. We will move the class to another day in the same week. Parents of teenage students get a progress note each month.

Most of our Tafsir students live in the USA, UK, Canada and Australia. We keep class times open from early morning to late evening in each of these countries.

  • Book a free trial and tell us which times suit you.
  • We match you with a Tafsir teacher. You can choose a male or female teacher.
  • We send you a fixed weekly timetable in your own time zone.
  • Classes run on Zoom or Google Meet. They are one-on-one, so you never wait behind other students.

Who This Course Is For

This course is for anyone aged 12 or above who can already read the Quran. It suits many kinds of students:

Can you not read the Arabic letters yet? Then start with our Noorani Qaida course (the first book for reading Arabic). Come back to Tafsir once you read well. Is your Tajweed still weak? The teacher will correct it in each class. You can also take our Tajweed course at the same time.

  • Adults who learned parts of the Quran by heart as children and now want to know what they recite
  • New Muslims who want a clear, step-by-step way into the Quran
  • University students who want to study the Quran next to their degree
  • Parents who want to explain the Quran to their own children

Tafsir Classes Online for Adults and Teenagers

Adults usually study once or twice a week, in the evening or on weekends. They choose their own surahs. Many adults follow this path:

Teenagers follow an easier course plan. The teacher focuses on the stories of the Prophets. The teacher also covers verses about good character and worship. Teens study the short surahs they use in Salah (the daily prayer). Each class has time for questions and talk. This way, young students learn to think about the Quran. They do not just sit and listen to a lecture.

  • Start with Surah Al-Fatiha and Juz Amma.
  • Then study Surah Yasin, Al-Kahf, Al-Mulk and Ar-Rahman.
  • Then read through the whole Quran, starting from Al-Baqarah.

Which Tafsir Books and Sources We Follow

Our teachers use the well-known classical books of Tafsir. These include Tafsir Ibn Kathir, Tafsir al-Jalalayn and Tafsir as-Sadi. They also use what the Companions said about the verses. For the Arabic words, they use the standard Arabic dictionaries. Where it helps to explain a verse, they use Balaghah (the study of style in Arabic).

We stay within mainstream Sunni scholarship. We avoid guesswork and views that belong to one sect. Some verses are often quoted in the wrong way. If you ask about such a verse, the teacher explains its true context. Then you can answer these claims with real knowledge.

Fees for the Online Tafsir Course

Tafsir classes cost the same as all our regular courses. The standard plan is three 30-minute classes a week. In the USA, it costs $54 a month. That gives you 12 classes each month. We also have plans with 2, 4 or 5 classes a week. You pay in USD, GBP, CAD or AUD, based on where you live.

You can see all plans and prices in each currency on our fees page at /quran-learning-fees/. There is no sign-up fee. Your first trial lesson is free.

Learn Tafsir and Recitation Together Online

Knowing the meaning and reciting well help each other. When you know what a verse means, you recite it with feeling. You also pause in the right places. When you recite well, you hear the rhythm and stress that the meaning needs. This is why each Tafsir lesson starts with recitation. Your teacher corrects your Tajweed as a normal part of the class.

This is very useful for Hifz (memorizing the Quran) students. When you understand a passage, you learn it by heart faster. You also remember it for longer. Are you in our Quran memorization program? Ask your teacher about adding a weekly Tafsir class for the part you are learning now.

Try a free class. You risk nothing.

It is hard to choose a Quran teacher online. So we made the first step free. Every step after it is easy to undo.

Parents may join any class. You can listen in from the next chair.

Frequently Asked Questions

No. The classes are taught in English. The teacher uses Arabic words only when they help you follow the text. A short grammar part covers the basics you need. If you want to study the language more deeply, you can take our Arabic course next to Tafsir. But you do not need it to join.

Most students start with Surah Al-Fatiha and Juz Amma. They already recite these surahs in daily prayer. So they gain the most from knowing what they mean. After that, you can go on in order from Surah Al-Baqarah. Or you can choose surahs you read often, such as Yasin, Al-Kahf and Al-Mulk.

No. The course gives you a sound general grasp of the Quran. You learn its meanings, its context and its rulings. Then you can live by it and explain it to your family. To become a Mufassir, a person needs many years of formal study. That study covers Arabic, Hadith (the sayings of the Prophet) and Usul (the rules behind Islamic law). An online course cannot cover all of that.

Yes. We have qualified female scholars. They teach Tafsir to sisters and to younger students. When you book your free trial, tell us what you prefer. We will match you with a female teacher at a time that suits you.

The course is ongoing. It has no fixed end date. With three classes a week, Juz Amma normally takes 3 to 4 months. A study of the whole Quran at the same pace takes a few years. Many students stay as long as they find the classes useful. You can pause or stop at any time with one week's notice.

Yes, from the age of 12. Teenage students follow a lighter course plan. It focuses on the stories of the Prophets and verses about good character and worship. It also covers the short surahs used in Salah. Lessons include questions and discussion. Parents get a note each month about what their child has covered.
