Online Quran Classes for Beginners

Online Quran Classes for Beginners: Start Here

Many people feel shy about starting. Some grew up with no Quran teacher nearby. Some learned a few surahs by ear but never learned the letters. Others are new to Islam. All of them are beginners, and all of them can learn to read the Quran.

At Salam Campus, a beginner class is private. It is just you and one tutor on a video call. No one else hears your mistakes. The tutor goes at your speed and explains each step in plain words. Our teachers can explain in English, Arabic or Urdu.

You do not need to know any Arabic. You do not need to buy a book. The tutor shows each page on the screen. All you need is a phone, tablet or laptop and a quiet corner.

The Beginner Path: Qaida, Reading, Then Tajweed

Every beginner walks the same path. There are three stages, and each one has its own course page. You do not need to plan it all now. Your tutor tells you when you are ready for the next step.

Tajweed means the rules for saying each letter the right way. You meet the first Tajweed sounds inside the Qaida. You learn the full rules while you read the Quran in stage 2. So you never learn to read first and then have to fix it later.

The beginner path, stage by stage
StageWhat you learnTypical time
1. Noorani QaidaLetters, sounds, vowel marks and how letters joinMost beginners take 3 to 6 months
2. Quran Reading with TajweedReading from the Quran itself, with the tutor fixing each rule as it comes upMost take 6 to 12 months at 3 classes a week
3. Your own goal: Hifz, Tafsir or ArabicThe Quran by heart, the meaning of the verses, or the languageHifz: about 3 years for the whole Quran, with daily classes. Tafsir: no end date. Arabic: 6 to 18 months
Next to any stage: Prayer Lessons and Daily DuasWudu and Salah, and short prayers for each part of the dayPrayer Lessons: 1 to 3 months. Daily Duas: 2 to 4 months

How Long the First Steps Take

With 2 or 3 classes a week, most beginners finish the Qaida in 3 to 6 months. Adults often move faster and can finish in about 3 months. Young children with 3 classes a week usually take 4 to 6 months.

After the Qaida, most students need 6 to 12 months to read the Quran smoothly and by the rules, at 3 classes a week. A young child who has just finished the Qaida takes closer to 1 year.

These are normal times, not promises. Two things change your pace the most. Do you come to class every week? And do you practise a little each day? Your tutor gives you a real estimate after the first 2 or 3 lessons.

Your First Class: What Happens in 30 Minutes

Your first class is a free trial. It is a full 30-minute lesson with a real tutor, not a sales call. We do not ask for card details, and there is nothing to buy.

The tutor says hello and asks a few easy questions. Then the tutor checks what you can read. If you cannot read any Arabic yet, that is a perfect place to start. From this, the tutor finds your level and explains what a weekly plan would cover.

At the end, you get a short note. It shows the course we suggest, the number of classes a week and the fee in your currency. Then you decide. If you want to go on, you choose a plan. If not, you simply stop. If the teacher did not feel right, ask us about a trial with a different teacher.

Beginner Classes for Children (from Age 4)

Children can start from age 4. Classes for ages 4 to 7 last 25 minutes. They use games, flashcards and lots of praise. Older children have 30-minute classes.

Your child has the same tutor in every class. Parents can sit in on any lesson. After each class, the tutor writes a short note about what was covered and what to practise. Each month, you also get a progress report.

Children who finish the Qaida go on to Quran reading. Many also add short surahs, daily duas and salah (prayer). Hifz can start from age 7, once a child reads well.

Beginner Classes for Adults and New Muslims

It is never too late to start. Many adults read the Quran from memory, or from English letters (transliteration). They never learned the Arabic script itself. Others are new Muslims who start from zero. The Qaida expects nothing from you, so it works for both.

Adult classes keep a calm, steady pace. No one rushes you, and no question is too basic. You can book early mornings, late evenings or weekends, in your own time zone.

New Muslims often want to learn to pray first. Our Prayer Lessons teach wudu (washing before prayer) and salah, step by step and word by word. You can take them next to the Qaida. Your tutor can split the class time, so both move forward.

Pick a Male or Female Teacher

You choose a male or a female tutor when you book. The fee is the same. Sisters and young girls can ask for a female teacher. Sisters may also keep the camera off. The tutor corrects your reading by listening, and the page is on the screen.

Every tutor is a Hafiz, a Qari or an Alim. A Hafiz knows the whole Quran by heart. A Qari is an expert reciter, and an Alim is an Islamic scholar. Each one passes our teaching test before the first class. Want a different teacher later? Just ask. We set up a trial with the new teacher within a week.

Ten Minutes of Practice a Day

A little practice each day does more than one long session each week. Ten minutes is enough. It turns what you learned in class into a habit.

After each class, the tutor gives you a small task. Most of the time, it is reading 1 line a few times. The tutor checks it at the start of the next class. These simple habits help:

  • Pick a fixed time, such as after Fajr or before bed.
  • Read out loud, not in your head.
  • Go back to the letters that felt hard in class.
  • Parents of young children: sit next to your child. You do not need to read Arabic to help.

Beginner Plans and Fees

Every class is 30 minutes, live and 1-on-1. You pay each month in your own currency. There is no sign-up fee and no contract. Beginners usually start with 2 or 3 classes a week. You can change or pause your plan with 1 week's notice.

Teaching more than one child? The second and third child pay a lower fee. Weekend classes and female teachers cost the same. Here is each plan in US dollars, pounds, Canadian dollars and Australian dollars:
