Can You Learn the Quran from Zero as a New Muslim?

Yes. You do not need to know any Arabic to begin. A live tutor teaches you one-on-one, online, in 30-minute classes. You can start with prayer, then learn the Arabic letters, then read the Quran with Tajweed. Your tutor suggests a plan after your first class, and that class is free.

This page is for you if:

  • You have just become Muslim and want to pray with confidence.
  • You became Muslim some time ago and still cannot read the Arabic page.
  • You know a few surahs by heart, but only from English letters.
  • You feel shy that other Muslims seem ahead of you.

A Path from Zero, Step by Step

There is more than one right order. This is the order of our 90-day plan for new Muslims. Prayer comes first, because you use it every day. The Arabic letters start in weeks 5 and 6 of that plan. Here is the path:

A typical path for a new Muslim
StepWhat you learnA typical plan is
1. Prayer LessonsThe shahadah (the statement of faith), wudu, the five prayer times, Al-Fatihah and short surahs. Then each prayer, word by word.1 to 3 months
2. Noorani QaidaThe Arabic letters and their sounds, the vowel marks, and how letters join into words.3 to 6 months
3. Quran Reading with TajweedReading from the Quran itself, with the rules for saying each letter correctly.6 to 12 months
Daily Duas, next to any stepShort prayers for waking up, eating, sleeping and leaving home, with their meaning.2 to 4 months

The times are typical plans from our course pages. They are not promises. Everyone learns at their own speed.

The Tajweed course is for students who can already read basic Arabic. That is why the Qaida comes first. Not sure where you fit? The tutor checks this in your free class. Want adult classes in general? See our online Quran classes for adults.

What Your First Month Can Look Like

Our 90-day plan starts with Prayer Lessons. This is the first month of that course.

Can you say Al-Fatihah by the end of week 2? Then you are on track. If not, that is fine. You move on when you are ready, not by the calendar.

  • Free trial: the tutor asks what you know. If you do not know a prayer yet, the tutor starts with the shahadah.
  • Weeks 1 and 2: faith, wudu, the prayer times and Al-Fatihah.
  • Weeks 3 and 4: the full 2-unit Fajr (dawn) prayer.
  • After every class: a short note with the words you practised.
  • Every month: a report on your progress.

Words You Will Hear in Class

These ten words come up in the first weeks. We checked each meaning against two published sources, listed at the end of this page. This is a word list. It is not a ruling.

Quran class words and what they mean
WordWhat it means
Bismillah"In the name of Allah." Muslims say it before they start a task, such as a meal. Every surah except one begins with it.
SurahA chapter of the Quran. The Quran has 114 surahs. Some are several pages long and some are only a few words. Al-Fatihah, the first, has 7 verses.
AyahA verse inside a surah. The word can also mean "sign". The plural is ayat.
JuzOne of 30 parts of the Quran, of about equal length. A juz can start or end in the middle of a surah. Some people read one juz a day to finish the Quran in a month.
TajweedThe rules for reciting the Quran correctly. The word means "to do something well". You learn to say each letter from its right place in the mouth or throat.
QaidaShort for Noorani Qaida, a first book for reading Arabic. It starts with the letters and their sounds. Then it adds vowel marks and joined letters.
SalahThe daily prayer. Muslims pray five times a day: at dawn, midday, afternoon, sunset and in the evening. It is one of the five pillars of Islam. See Prayer Lessons.
WuduThe washing you do before prayer. You clean parts of the body with water, such as the hands, face, arms and feet. Your tutor shows you each step.
DuaA prayer of asking. You call on Allah for help or good things. Many duas are short sayings for daily moments, such as eating or sleeping. See Daily Duas.
HafizA Muslim who knows the whole Quran by heart. It is a title of respect.

Privacy, Camera and Pace

It can feel hard to read aloud when you are just starting. This is how our classes keep your privacy and your pace.

  • Every class is live and one-on-one on Zoom or Google Meet. We run no group classes, so no other student hears you read.
  • Sisters may keep their camera off. The tutor then corrects your words by ear.
  • A camera helps with hard letters, because the tutor can see your mouth. In Prayer Lessons it also lets the tutor see your movements.
  • We record classes for quality checks. Only our quality team and coordinators can see the recordings. We never publish them.
  • Our tutors can explain in English, Arabic or Urdu. You can ask as many questions as you like.
  • Classes run 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, in your own time zone. A weekend class costs the same. Tell us before a class and we move it.
  • A phone, tablet or laptop is enough. Your tutor shows each page on screen, so there is nothing to print. For Prayer Lessons you also need a prayer mat.

Choose a Male or Female Teacher

You choose a male or a female tutor, and the fee is the same. Tell us when you book your free trial. Read about our female Quran teachers or our male Quran teachers.

Each tutor is a Hafiz, a Qari or an Alim and passes our 5-step hiring check. See what each title means on our Quran teachers page. Not the right fit? Ask us about a trial with a different teacher. After you join, you can ask for a new teacher at any time, at no extra cost.

What We Do and Do Not Do

On this path we teach Quran reading, Tajweed, prayer and duas. We are an online Quran academy. We are not a mosque or a fatwa service.

  • We do not give fatwas (rulings). We do not give advice on how to convert. For these, ask a qualified imam or scholar.
  • Small details of prayer can differ between schools of Islamic law. For a ruling on any detail, ask a qualified scholar.
  • Online classes are private, so they do not give you a community. A local mosque or a group for new Muslims can help with that.
  • We cannot promise a date by which you will read well. The times on this page are typical plans.
