How long will you fast in Ramadan 2027? It depends on where you live. In February the days are short in the north and long in the south. Below are the expected dawn and sunset times for day one in 11 cities. They are in the USA, Canada, the UK and Australia.

These are expected times from public calculators, not a mosque timetable. We show the method for each country. We also link the pages of ours that have more cities and more days. We do not give religious rulings. For a question about fasting, ask your local scholar.

When Does Ramadan 2027 Start?

Ramadan 1448 is expected to start on Monday 8 February 2027. The moon decides the real day, so some places may start a day later. In our 11 cities, the first fast lasts from about 11 hours 15 minutes to about 15 hours 25 minutes. The longest fasts are in Australia.

Two public sources give the same expected date. The Time and Date Ramadan page lists Monday 8 February 2027 as a tentative date. The Wego Ramadan 2027 guide expects the month to run from Monday 8 February to Monday 8 March 2027.

Wego says people will look for the new moon after sunset on Sunday 7 February 2027. Some places go by the moon they see, and some go by a calculation. So the first day can differ by one day. Ask your local mosque a few days before.

If your mosque starts a day later, move every date on this page by one day. Dawn and sunset change by only 1 or 2 minutes. The length of the fast changes by 2 to 4 minutes.

How Do We Work Out the Length of the Fast?

A fast starts at Fajr, the first light of dawn. It ends at Maghrib, which is sunset. The length of the fast is the time between the two. We took both times for 8 February 2027 from the public AlAdhan prayer-time service. We use one method for each country, the same as our city pages:

  • USA and Canada: the ISNA method, from the Islamic Society of North America. It sets Fajr when the sun is 15 degrees below the horizon.
  • UK and Australia: the Muslim World League method. It sets Fajr when the sun is 18 degrees below the horizon.
  • In both methods, Maghrib is the moment of sunset.

We checked every sunset on the sun tables of Time and Date. The two sources are within 1 minute of each other in all 11 cities. Time and Date also lists when astronomical twilight starts. That is when the sun is 18 degrees below the horizon. That time is within 1 minute of the AlAdhan 18-degree Fajr in all 11 cities. The 15-degree times are not on that site. We worked them out again with a standard sun formula, and they matched within 1 minute.

Because the methods differ, compare cities inside one country, not across countries. Your mosque may use another method or its own timetable. Between our two methods, Fajr differs by 14 to 20 minutes in these cities. Follow your local timetable. For a question about fasting, ask your local scholar.

USA: Expected Fasting Hours on 8 February 2027

The first fast is about 11 hours 40 minutes in New York and Chicago. It is a little over 12 hours in Houston, which lies further south. These are the expected times on the local clock, with the ISNA method for Fajr:

Expected fasting hours in New York, Chicago and Houston on 8 February 2027
CityFajr (dawn)SunsetLength of fast
New York5:42 am5:22 pm11 h 40 min
Chicago5:37 am5:15 pm11 h 38 min
Houston6:00 am6:05 pm12 h 05 min

By 8 March the fast grows to about 12 hours 50 minutes in all three cities. With the Muslim World League method, Fajr is 14 to 16 minutes earlier, so the fast is that much longer.

Canada: Expected Fasting Hours on 8 February 2027

Toronto is on Eastern time. Vancouver is on the UTC-7 clock that British Columbia keeps all year, so Fajr comes after 7 am there. These are the expected times, with the ISNA method for Fajr:

Expected fasting hours in Toronto and Vancouver on 8 February 2027
CityFajr (dawn)SunsetLength of fast
Toronto6:05 am5:38 pm11 h 33 min
Vancouver7:04 am6:21 pm11 h 17 min

By 8 March the fast grows to about 12 hours 50 minutes in both cities. With the Muslim World League method, Fajr is 16 to 19 minutes earlier, so the fast is that much longer.

UK: Expected Fasting Hours on 8 February 2027

The UK is on Greenwich Mean Time in February. The sun sets just after 5 pm, so the first fast is about 11 hours 25 minutes. These are the expected times, with the Muslim World League method for Fajr:

Expected fasting hours in London, Manchester and Birmingham on 8 February 2027
CityFajr (dawn)SunsetLength of fast
London5:34 am5:02 pm11 h 28 min
Manchester5:43 am5:05 pm11 h 22 min
Birmingham5:41 am5:07 pm11 h 26 min

By 8 March the fast is about 13 hours 15 minutes. It grows by close to 2 hours in the month, because the days get longer quickly this far north. With the ISNA method, Fajr is 19 to 20 minutes later, so the fast is that much shorter.

Australia: Expected Fasting Hours on 8 February 2027

February is summer in Australia, so the first fast is long. Sydney and Melbourne are on daylight saving time, so their clocks run one hour ahead. Perth does not change its clock. These are the expected times, with the Muslim World League method for Fajr:

Expected fasting hours in Sydney, Melbourne and Perth on 8 February 2027
CityFajr (dawn)SunsetLength of fast
Sydney4:51 am7:55 pm15 h 04 min
Melbourne5:02 am8:27 pm15 h 25 min
Perth4:18 am7:13 pm14 h 55 min

Here the fast gets shorter through the month, by about 2 to 3 minutes a day. By 8 March it is about 14 hours. Melbourne is at 14 hours 10 minutes, Sydney at 14 hours and Perth at 13 hours 56 minutes. With the ISNA method, Fajr is 17 to 19 minutes later, so the fast is that much shorter.

Why Does the Length of the Fast Change?

Three things set the length of the fast:

  • Season and place: in winter the day is short, so the fast is short. In summer it is long. The further you live from the equator, the bigger the gap between the seasons.
  • Day of the month: the fast changes a little every day. In the USA, Canada and the UK it grows by about 2 to 4 minutes a day. In Australia it shrinks by about 2 to 3 minutes a day.
  • Method: the 15-degree method puts Fajr 14 to 20 minutes later than the 18-degree method, so the fast is shorter.

In February it is winter in the USA, Canada and the UK, and summer in Australia. Close to the equator the fast hardly changes. Our East Asia page shows Singapore at about 13 hours 20 minutes all month.

How Can You Plan Quran Classes Around the Fast?

Classes at Salam Campus are live and one-on-one. They run 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, in your own time zone. So you can keep your time, move it to after iftar, or pause for Ramadan. See our Ramadan Quran classes page for the three choices and some class-time ideas.

Two free tools help with the month. The Ramadan Quran reading planner is a printable 30-day sheet. The guide on how to finish the Quran in Ramadan has a plan of about 20 pages a day. It also has a slower plan.

Your first class is a free 30-minute trial, and no card is needed. You can book a free trial class before Ramadan starts.
