Quran Lessons That Fit a Canadian School Day

Canadian children have long days. There is school, then homework, then hockey, swimming or music. In winter, snow can turn a short drive into a long one. A Quran class at home takes the drive away.

Each class is 25 or 30 minutes and 1-on-1. Your child reads to one tutor, who hears every letter and fixes mistakes on the spot. Two to five short classes a week fit between school and supper. That is much easier than one long class on the weekend.

Weekday mornings also work for homeschooling families. Weekend classes cost the same as weekday ones.

After-School Times in Every Canadian Time Zone

Canada has six time zones, from Newfoundland to British Columbia. We book every class in your local time, so you never have to do the maths.

The table below shows one class slot across the country. A 4:30 pm class in Toronto is 1:30 pm in Vancouver. That is still school time in BC, so a Vancouver family books its own 4:30 pm slot instead. Every family gets the time that suits its own clock. Most of Saskatchewan does not change its clocks in summer. We follow your local clock there too.

Which Course for Which Age?

Every child starts where they are. Use this list as a rough guide. The tutor confirms the right course in the free first class.

  • Ages 4 to 7: Noorani Qaida in 25-minute classes, with games, flashcards and lots of praise. First duas and short surahs too.
  • Ages 5 and up: Islamic Studies for Kids. Beliefs, worship, manners and the life of the Prophet (peace be upon him), one level per school year.
  • Ages 8 to 12: finish the Qaida, then move on to Quran Reading with Tajweed in 30-minute classes. Salah and daily duas are added in small parts.
  • Ages 7 and up who read well: Hifz (learning the Quran by heart), with a new lesson and revision every day.
  • Teens 13 to 16: smooth reading with full Tajweed, plus chosen surahs or Juz Amma (the last part of the Quran).
  • Ages 12 and up: Tafsir, to learn the meaning of the verses they read.

What Happens in a 25 or 30 Minute Class

Every class follows the same simple shape, so children know what to expect. Young children get 25 minutes, often with a game or a sticker chart. Older children have 30 minutes. The tutor shows the Qaida or Quran page on screen and points to each word as your child reads.

  • A few minutes of revision from the last class
  • New work, with the tutor correcting each sound as your child reads
  • A quick recap, a dua and some praise to finish
  • A small task to practise before the next class

What Age Can My Child Start?

Most children start between 4 and 6. By then, a child can sit for about 20 minutes and follow simple steps. Your child does not need to know any letters first. That is what the Qaida teaches.

Older children can start at any age. A 10-year-old who never learned to read Arabic also begins with the Qaida, at their own pace. With 3 classes a week, most children finish the Qaida in 4 to 6 months.

Are Classes One-to-One?

Yes, always. We do not run group classes. For the whole lesson, the tutor listens to one child only. A shy child cannot hide, and a quick child is never held back.

Brothers and sisters each get their own class and their own tutor. So each child can be at a different level without slowing the other down.

Your child keeps the same tutor every class. If the tutor is away, a trained backup teacher takes the class. If your tutor misses a class, you get it back.

Parents Can Watch Any Class

Classes run on Zoom or Google Meet. Put the device in a shared room, and you can listen from the next seat. You are welcome at every lesson.

After each class, the tutor writes a short note. It says what your child covered and what to practise. Once a month, our quality team sends you a progress report. If something worries you, tell us. We reply within 1 working day.

Before teaching any child, every tutor passes ID and certificate checks, a reading test, a live teaching test and an interview. In a new tutor's first month, we review their classes every week.

Holidays, Pauses and Ramadan

Family life in Canada has its own rhythm. There is March Break, the long summer holiday, exams and Ramadan. You can pause or change your plan with 1 week's notice. You do not pay for paused weeks.

If a new school term changes your week, we move your slot at no charge. If you tell us before a class, your child can make it up in the same week. In Ramadan, ask us to move classes around suhoor (the meal before dawn) or taraweeh (the night prayers of Ramadan).

Kids' Classes in Toronto, Mississauga, Vancouver and Ottawa

Our classes are online, so any child in Canada can join, from St. John's to Victoria. We also have pages for four cities, with local class times and details:

Children in Calgary, Edmonton, Montreal, Winnipeg, Halifax and every town in between get the same tutors, the same fees and the same free first class.

How to Book Your Child's Free Class

Send the free trial form, or email us. Tell us your city, your child's age and level, and 2 or 3 times that suit you. We reply with a tutor and a trial time in your local time zone, most often within 24 hours.

Your child then meets the tutor in a live 30-minute class, and you can sit in. Want a female tutor for your daughter? Just ask when you book. We keep that choice for the whole course. At the end, you get a short note with the course and plan we suggest. If you are happy, your child can start the same week.

Try a free class. You risk nothing.

It is hard to choose a Quran teacher online. So we made the first step free. Every step after it is easy to undo.

Parents may join any class. You can listen in from the next chair.
