By Salam Campus

Many adults in the UK want to read the Quran better. But an evening class across town is hard to fit around work, family and the commute. This guide explains how Quran classes for adults in the UK work when they are online and one-to-one. It covers where to start, lesson times around work, female tutors, reverts, fees in pounds and adult Hifz (memorising the Quran).

At Salam Campus, every adult lesson is live, private and 30 minutes long. Adult lessons are never mixed with children's classes. For the full picture of our UK teaching, see our online Quran classes in the UK page.

Quran Classes for Adults in the UK: Why One-to-One Works

Adults come to the Quran with many stories. Some went to madrasa (mosque school) as children and stopped as teenagers. Some never had the chance to learn. Some found Islam as adults. Others want to read well before they teach their own children.

In a group, each person gets only a little reading time. In a one-to-one lesson, the tutor hears every letter you read and fixes it straight away. Nobody else is listening, so there is no need to feel shy. The lesson moves at your speed, not the speed of a class.

Online lessons also remove the journey. Wherever you live, in a city or a village, in England, Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland, the class comes to you. Rain and traffic do not matter.

Where Are You Starting From?

Before your first lesson, it helps to know which group you are in. Each one leads to a different course:

The adult who read at madrasa is a very common case. You may read quickly, but some habits came along with the speed. A letter may come from the wrong part of the throat. A long vowel may be cut short, or a short one stretched. These are easy to fix with a tutor who listens closely. Once the fix becomes a habit, it stays.

In the Quran (73:4), Allah tells the Prophet (peace be upon him) to recite the Quran slowly and with care. Tajweed is how we learn to do that.

Not sure which group you are in? A free trial lesson settles it. The tutor listens to you read for a few minutes and tells you where to start.

  • You cannot read Arabic yet: start with Noorani Qaida, the first book for letters, vowels and joining. At 3 lessons a week, this usually takes 3 to 4 months.
  • You read at madrasa as a child, but now you read slowly or with gaps: the tutor checks what you remember and picks up from there.
  • You read fluently, but no one taught you Tajweed (the rules for saying each letter correctly): join Quran Reading with Tajweed. A short test shows which rules need work, so you do not start again from the beginning.
  • You are new to Islam: start with what you need for prayer, then the letters. See the section for reverts below.

One-to-One Lessons Around Work

Adult lessons run from early morning to late evening, 7 days a week. You choose a fixed slot, and it stays yours each week. The table shows some common slots.

All lessons are booked in UK time. The clocks go forward on the last Sunday in March and back on the last Sunday in October. Your tutor makes the change on their side. So your slot stays the same on your calendar all year, as the table shows.

Shifts and diaries change. If something comes up, tell us 1 day before and we will move the lesson for free. In Ramadan, lessons can move to after Fajr (the dawn prayer) or after Taraweeh (the night prayer) if you ask.

For Sisters: Female Tutors and Private Lessons

Many sisters feel more at ease reading aloud to a woman. You can ask for a female tutor when you book, and she will teach your trial lesson herself. That way you know she is the right fit before you start. We keep your choice for the whole course.

Our female tutors teach at every UK time slot, including evenings and weekends. Each one holds a Tajweed certificate and has taught adults online. They teach every course, from the first letters to Hifz and Tafsir (the meaning of the Quran).

Your camera can be on or off. The tutor corrects you by listening, and the page is on the screen. A female tutor costs the same as a male tutor. You can take a daytime lesson while the children are at school. If your daughter wants to learn too, she gets her own lesson at her own level. Read more on our Quran classes for ladies page.

For Reverts: Start With What You Need for Salah

If you have recently become Muslim, welcome. You do not have to read the whole Quran from the page before you can pray. Start with what you say in salah (the daily prayer), then build from there.

Our prayer lessons start from zero. Each Arabic phrase comes in English letters with its meaning. The tutor says it slowly until you can repeat it. A typical order looks like this:

Everything is in English, and every question is welcome. A local masjid (mosque) may also have classes or support for new Muslims, and a tutor at home works well next to it. For a longer plan, read how to start learning the Quran as a new Muslim.

  • Weeks 1 and 2: wudu (washing before prayer), the prayer times and Al-Fatihah (the opening chapter of the Quran).
  • Weeks 3 and 4: the full 2-unit Fajr (dawn) prayer, with the tashahhud (words said while sitting in prayer).
  • Weeks 5 and 6: the 3-unit and 4-unit prayers, with the extra sitting in the middle.
  • Then, or alongside: the Arabic letters, so you can begin reading the Quran itself.

Fees in Pounds

Fees are billed monthly in pounds. Every plan gives you live, one-to-one lessons of 30 minutes. Three lessons a week is our standard plan. It keeps you moving without filling your week.

There is no sign-up fee and no contract. Evening and weekend lessons cost the same, and so does a female tutor. You pay each month by card, PayPal or bank transfer. You can change your plan with 1 week's notice, or pause for a month without losing your tutor. If you change your mind within 7 days of paying, we refund every lesson you have not taken.

Longer lessons of 45 or 60 minutes are possible too. Ask us for a price. See every plan on our fees page.

Adult Hifz in the UK

Memorising the Quran is not only for children. Adults bring focus and a clear reason to learn. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said that the best of you are those who learn the Quran and teach it (Sahih al-Bukhari 5027).

Hifz needs a short lesson most days. Many adults take a daily lesson at 6 or 7 in the morning, UK time. Others learn late in the evening, after the children are asleep. You can also begin with a smaller goal, such as Juz Amma (the last of the Quran's 30 parts). If you can only manage 3 lessons a week, the tutor sets a slower goal you can keep up. Going slowly is better than giving up.

Every Hifz tutor on our team is a hafiz or hafizah (a man or woman who knows the whole Quran by heart). Each lesson has a new portion, a review of recent pages and a review of older pages. An adult with more free time may finish in 2 to 3 years. With 3 lessons a week, expect 5 years or more. The Hifz plan is £110 a month for 20 lessons. See Hifz classes online in the UK for details. You can also read how the sabaq, sabqi and manzil cycle works.

Your First Lesson and First Month

Your first lesson is a free trial. It is a full 30-minute one-to-one lesson with the tutor we would give you. We take no card details, and you do not have to continue. Here is what to expect:

Not the right tutor? Ask us about a second trial with a different one. The aim is steady progress over months and years, not a rush of lessons and then a long gap.

You do not need to wait for the perfect week. Book your free trial lesson, pick a slot that fits your diary and read your first page with a tutor from home.

  • Before: send the trial form with your level and 2 or 3 times that suit you. We reply by WhatsApp or email within 24 hours.
  • In the trial: the tutor asks a few gentle questions, listens to you read, then explains what a weekly plan would cover.
  • After: you get a short note with the course we suggest, the lessons per week and the fee in pounds.
  • First month: you keep your slot, get a short note after each lesson and receive a report at the end of the month.

Nothing changes for you. Lessons are booked in UK time, GMT in winter and BST in summer. Your tutor makes the change on their side, so your slot stays the same on your calendar.

Yes. Ask for a female tutor when you book, and she will teach your trial lesson. Female tutors teach at every UK time slot, and your camera can stay off. A female tutor costs the same.

Plans start at £28 a month for 2 lessons a week. Three lessons a week cost £42, and 5 a week cost £60. The Hifz plan is £110 a month. There is no sign-up fee.

Usually not. A short test shows which letters and rules need work. The tutor builds your plan around those, which is much faster than starting from the first page.
