Learn Ten Qirat Online with a Certified Qari

Most Muslims recite the Quran in one reading only. It is called Hafs from Asim. Many never hear any other reading. The ten Qirat (readings) are the full set of true ways to recite the Quran. Each one reached us through an unbroken chain of teachers from the Prophet (peace be upon him). Learning them is the highest level of Quran recitation study. Most students can only find it at a few institutes in Egypt and the Arab world.

At Salam Campus, you can learn ten Qirat online from home. Our teachers studied at Qirat colleges. They hold Ijazah (a teaching license) in the ten readings through the Shatibiyyah and Durrah. Classes are one-on-one. So your teacher hears and corrects each line you recite. Your Qari has also recited the whole Quran in that reading to his own teacher.

What Are the Ten Qirat?

The word Qirat means readings. In Quran studies, it means the known, accepted ways of reciting the Quran. Each way goes back to a famous Imam of recitation. His students kept it and passed it on. These readings are not different Qurans. The changes between them are small and fixed. They affect sounds, vowels, how long a sound is held and a few words. All of them were revealed by Allah. All of them reached us with certainty.

The readings began with the seven Ahruf (seven ways the Quran was revealed). Here is what the true hadith tell us:

After Uthman ibn Affan put the Mushaf (the written Quran) together, some readings matched its script. The Companions and their students kept teaching those readings. Over the next 200 years, they became the schools we now call the ten Qirat.

  • The Prophet (peace be upon him) asked Allah to make the Quran easy for his people.
  • So the Quran was revealed in seven forms.
  • This helped tribes with different ways of speaking to recite it with ease.
  • Once, Umar ibn al-Khattab heard Hisham ibn Hakim recite Surah Al-Furqan in a way he did not know.
  • Umar took him to the Prophet, who said both ways had been revealed.

What You Will Learn

The course covers two things. First, you learn the facts behind each reading. Second, you learn to recite each reading without mistakes. You will study the history, the reciters and the rules. Then you recite the Quran in each reading until your teacher is happy with it.

  • Where the seven Ahruf came from and how the ten Qirat grew from them
  • The seven Mutawatir Imams: Nafi, Ibn Kathir, Abu Amr, Ibn Amir, Asim, Hamza and al-Kisai
  • The three Mashhur Imams: Abu Jafar, Yaqub and Khalaf
  • The two Rawis (students who passed on the reading) of each Imam and what makes each one special
  • Usul (the general rules that apply all through a reading)
  • Farsh (the exact word changes, surah by surah)
  • The Shatibiyyah and the Durrah as the main guide books
  • Reciting the full Quran in each reading to earn Ijazah

Ten Qirat Course: 7 Mutawatir and 3 Mashhur Readings

Scholars split the ten readings into two groups. The first group is the seven Mutawatir readings. In every generation, a very large number of trusted reciters passed them on. So a mistake in them is not possible. They belong to these Imams:

The second group is the three Mashhur (well-known) readings of Abu Jafar, Yaqub and Khalaf. They are also true and widely accepted. Most scholars add them to the seven to make ten. Together, they are the full set a Qari must master to hold Ijazah in the ten Qirat.

Our course plan follows the classical order. First, you study the seven readings through the Shatibiyyah, the poem by Imam ash-Shatibi. Then you study the three extra readings through the Durrah by Ibn al-Jazari. Some students prefer the Tayyibah, which covers all ten together. We can arrange this with a teacher who holds that Ijazah.

  • Nafi of Madinah
  • Ibn Kathir of Makkah
  • Abu Amr of Basrah
  • Ibn Amir of Damascus
  • Asim, Hamza and al-Kisai of Kufah

How Online Classes Work at Salam Campus

After your free trial, we give you a Qari who teaches the ten readings. Together, you agree on a fixed weekly timetable. Classes are 30 minutes and one-on-one, on Zoom or Google Meet. Each lesson has two parts:

You recite from a Mushaf. The teacher gives you the lines of the Shatibiyyah or Durrah for that passage. The teacher also explains what those lines mean. We record your progress after each lesson. You move on to the next reading only when the current one is strong.

Advanced students in the USA, UK, Canada and Australia usually take 3 to 5 classes a week. This helps them keep a steady pace. Our timetable covers early mornings and late evenings in all four countries.

  • A short talk on the rules of the reading you are studying
  • Live recitation, where the teacher stops you at each point that needs fixing

Who This Course Is For

This is not a course for beginners. It is for students who have finished Hifz (memorizing the whole Quran). It is also for students who read the Quran smoothly with correct Tajweed. You should be able to recite from the Mushaf without stopping. Our usual students are:

Not at that level yet? Then start with our Quran Reading with Tajweed course. Our Hifz program can help you memorize the Quran. Once your teacher says your recitation is ready, you can move into the Qirat program.

  • Imams of mosques
  • Quran teachers
  • Students who have finished Hifz
  • Serious adult learners

Learn 10 Qirat Online: Who Can Join

In the trial lesson, the teacher asks you to recite a few pages from different parts of the Quran. You recite in Hafs from Asim. The teacher listens for three things:

If you pass, you can join the course straight away. If you are close, you first get a short plan to prepare.

Being a Hafiz (a person who knows the whole Quran by heart) helps a lot. But you do not need it for the early stages. Some students study one or two readings in Juz Amma or one surah they choose. This lets them learn the subject without aiming for full Ijazah. We are happy to set that up for you.

  • Makharij (where each letter comes from in the mouth and throat)
  • How well you apply the Tajweed rules
  • How smoothly you read

Ten Qirat Classes Online: Ijazah and Sanad

An Ijazah is a certificate. A Qari gives it to a student who recites the whole Quran to him in one reading without mistakes. It carries the Sanad (the chain of teachers going back to the Prophet, peace be upon him). Our teachers hold Ijazah in the ten Qirat. They can give it for each reading. They can also give it for all ten together, once the student recites the full Quran.

Getting Ijazah in all ten readings usually takes several years. Many students take these steps:

  • First, they earn Ijazah in Hafs.
  • Next, they add a second reading, such as Warsh from Nafi or Qalun.
  • Then they go on to the other readings, one at a time.
  • Each Ijazah is a real achievement on its own.

Fees for the Online Ten Qirat Course

Qirat classes use the same monthly plans as our other courses. The standard plan is three classes a week. For students in the USA, it costs $54 a month. This covers 12 classes of 30 minutes each. If you want to move faster, you can choose four or five classes a week.

You can see each plan and its price in GBP, CAD and AUD on our fees page at /quran-learning-fees/. We do not charge for joining. We do not charge for certificates. Your first lesson is a free trial.

Frequently Asked Questions

For full Ijazah in a reading, yes. You must recite the whole Quran to the teacher without mistakes. This is much easier from memory. To study the subject and practice readings in a few surahs, you only need smooth recitation with good Tajweed. The teacher checks your level in the free trial. Then the teacher tells you the best path for you.

Most students already recite in Hafs from Asim. So we start by making that reading perfect. If you do not have Ijazah in it yet, we give it to you. The next reading is usually Warsh or Qalun from Nafi. After that come the other Imams of the Shatibiyyah. Last come the three readings of the Durrah.

It depends on your starting level. It also depends on how many classes you take each week. With 3 to 5 classes a week, one reading with Ijazah usually takes 6 to 12 months. Learning all ten takes many years, with Ijazah for each reading or for all ten together. That is why we say the course takes 12 months and more.

Yes. First, you recite the whole Quran in a reading to your teacher without mistakes. Then your teacher gives you an Ijazah. It includes his own Sanad back to the Prophet (peace be upon him). We can give it for each reading on its own. We can also give it for all ten together once you finish the whole program.

Yes. We have female teachers who hold Ijazah in the ten readings. They teach sisters one-on-one. Tell us what you prefer when you book the free trial. We will find a teacher and a time that works in your country. This includes evenings and weekends.

No. All ten readings are the same Quran that Allah revealed. They reached us through true chains of teachers. All of them match the Uthmani script (the way the first official Mushaf was written). The changes are only in sounds, vowels, how long a sound is held and a small number of words. None of them change the meaning in a way that clashes. You learn this in the first lessons of the course.
